![]() Fan works involving the blue hedgehog have flooded the internet for years, with the most impressive being Sonic fan games. Sonic's reputation quickly spiraled, but his popularity remains arguably as strong as ever. Rather than revert back to what made his first couple of games so good, Sega kept pushing 3D titles, even after they left the console business. Unlike his contemporaries, Sonic wasn't - and arguably still isn't - able to find a comfortable footing in the 3D space. That was until the 16-bit days ended, and the shift to 3D began. Needless to say, Sonic was looking to run away with the title of the face of gaming. He was even the very first video game character to ever get his own balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. Sonic Frontiers comes to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S next yearin time for the holidays. The film seems to be taking many cues from a mix of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles and Sonic Adventure. Stars Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey introduced the trailer, which gave us a closer look at Tails and a very Sonic 3-esque Knuckles, rocking the old attitude he brought with him in his initial appearance. The Game Awards also featured the debut trailer for Sonic’s next big-screen adventure, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The world shows some very obvious inspiration from BOTW, and even includes tons of Shieikah Tower-like structures around the map. Sega has confirmed that more details on the game will be released throughout June, so stick around for the latest Sonic Frontiers news.Now that we’ve gotten our first look, it’s clear the leak was on the nose. The game is currently scheduled to be released later this year for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4 PS5, Switch, and PC. The 30-second gameplay preview of Sonic Frontiers is quite brief, but does give fans the first look at gameplay in the latest Sonic adventure. ![]() Drawing comparisons to Breath of the Wild, this new title looks like a departure from the standard franchise formula, mainly in its move to an open-world approach or “open-zone” as Sega is calling it. Sonic Frontiers was revealed last year during The Game Awards. We can see different rails and platforms far off in the distance, and the sequence of Sonic running on a wheel seems like the game’s equivalent to a recon tower, scanning and revealing notable points of interest in the surrounding areas. The new gameplay footage provides us with a better idea of what an open-world Sonic game will look like. We also get a look at combat against some fascinating enemies, one of which is a massive metal claw that looks like it was detached from an even larger beast. There’s platforming, ring-collecting, and all of the regular fixings of a Sonic game present. In the brief video, we see the iconic blue blur dashing through forested areas and grassy plains. The Sonic Frontiers gameplay preview was released on the Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube channel as an IGN First ahead of a bigger reveal this June. Though not much is known about this new chapter, publisher Sega has provided our first look at gameplay in Sonic Frontiers, showing off the game’s various environments, bosses, and obstacles. The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise will expand later this year with the release of Sonic Frontiers.
